1.4 BACK TO BASICS - Reviving Forgotten Skills

In this work I thought about the identity, yes, this is about our identity as family, community, or even culture. Think through about your grandmother, it might happen that she doesn't follows a chicken stew recipe in the conventional way, maybe she adds an ingredient or removes another; that's no longer her lovely recipe, and more concerning, you couldn't pass the torch to your descendants because you don't know how something that identifies your family is done. We have to revive some traditional skills, or why not? create new ones, something to remember...

REVIVING FORGOTEN SKILLS - "The Art of Baking" (Writing)

In today's fast-paced, technology-driven world, many traditional skills have faded from convention into oddity. Where is the kid learning from pops how to repair anything around the house? What about grandma teaching to the youngest ones how to mend the seams on the clothes? These kinds of skills are being left in oblivion, and should be alarming to everyone, it should concern us, with me happens.

I want to talk about such a delightful skill: Baking. Before those commercial bakeries and pre-packaged goods, baking was a fundamental part of household life. Now you just have to go to choose and buy it or even just make an order online; just think about it, when do we eat cakes, cookies, or the famous fruitcake on Christmas? you hit the nail, on social events, such as birthdays, weddings, and so on... That's why it should be a timeless practice meant to connect us.

My grandmother would prepare our own bread, pastries, and other backed goods from scratch, ensuring quality, nutrition, and overall, a wide variety of ingredients. The creativity had no limits! Many modern households rely on store-bought goods (and don't forget the preservatives and artificial stuff in the food), but we have to be aware about the possibility of losing the family connection and traditions, creativity, constant practice on a skill, and patience.

I want to say "give it a try" to anyone who doesn't think preserving or creating a new tradition in the family is important. Would you like eating something that contains ingredients of your best preference? well, let me tell you when baking you have the opportunity of what stays and what not. There are so many options to choose on internet. In my case when I started baking, I noticed you have to start with simple recipes like simple bread, muffins, or even cookies.

Once again, give it a try! Would you decide to create a new tradition in your family as I did with baking? Try to learn another skill like how to do useful knots, bracelets, or even about tools.

Well, writing this made me think about creating a skill to develop to teach my descendants how to do it, knots always are handy and for sure is on my list to-do. I have a variety of tools in my house that my father left (that's the reason of its mention on my text), and I know how to use some of them, but I have to learn more about the other ones. At the same time, we have 6 bikes in the house, and I must learn how to maintain and repair them. I feel happy to possess enough notions about bikes given by my father.
